Decoding the algorithmic information
compressed in natural complex systems.
Nature is not an engineer but a tinkerer.
Complex systems are not designed from nothing. They are what long evolution leaves behind — reuse, tinkering, recombination. Nature never starts over; it keeps modifying and accumulating on top of what is already there. Working from the perspective of Algorithmic Information Theory (AIT), we represent objects as unrelated as molecules, proteins, genomes and neural networks in one common way — as generative processes — and quantify the reused structure and generative complexity hidden inside them. We believe every complex system still carries the algorithmic information of its own evolutionary history, in compressed form.
